Hidden in the Byfield State Forest, approximately 30min drive north of Yeppoon in Queensland you will find Upper Stony Creek Picnic Grounds and Camp area. This area has long been a secret local spot but is fast making its way to stardom on social media for its irresistible freshwater swimming holes.
I first started visiting this special place as a young child and have many fond memories of family days spent here simply swimming and exploring to our heart’s content.
Before you check out my 5 top tips for a great day at Stony, take a virtual tour!
Remember the floaties!
As we all know, freshwater does not offer the same buoyancy, compared with ocean swimming, therefore some pool noodles or inflatables make for a very relaxing swim with minimal effort… especially in some of the deeper sections of the creek.
Pack the snags!
Stony Creek Day Use area offers a grassy picnic area with tables and electric BBQs. I can assure you that nothing tastes better after a morning of swimming then a good ol’ sausage sizzle.
Go for a bushwalk
At the far end of the day use area is a short bushwalk (Stony Creek/Venusta circuit) which leads to some very rewarding rockpools and small rapids (depending on rainfall). Often you can score a little area to yourself to enjoy the cascading waters. Tip: Pack some old runners or wet shoes. The shallow water and rapids can often be tricky to walk in with bare feet.
Come prepared for nature!
Like all state forests you are surrounded by the wilderness, so it is always best to come prepared with sun protection, insect repellent, drinking water, first-aid kit and a sturdy rubbish bag.
Book a campsite
Once you’ve arrived you are not going to want to leave! Plan ahead and book a campsite via the Queensland Parks Website . There are only 14 secluded sites to choose from and these are suitable for tent camping, campers and motorhomes (up to 4m).
Upper Stony Creek recreation area is via an unsealed road, which is suitable for 2wd vehicles. This road can be used by logging trucks, so care is required when driving these roads. Oh and be sure to keep an eye out for Emus on your drive in, as they are often seen along the roadside.
