One holiday, four completely different stays: the Capricorn Coast base-hopping itinerary

City streets. Rainforest hideaways. Beachside mornings. Barefoot island days.

Why choose just one kind of holiday when you can have four?

One of the best things about travelling through the Capricorn Coast Region is just how quickly the landscape and the pace can change. Spend one evening exploring Rockhampton, wake among the rainforest around Byfield, swap the trees for the coastline at Yeppoon and finish your holiday with your shoes off on Great Keppel Island.

Rather than checking into one place for the week, try base hopping your way through the region.

Over seven nights, four very different stays reveal four sides of the Capricorn Coast – without spending half your holiday getting from one to the next. The longer you give this destination, the more it changes around you…

Night 1: Rockhampton — start with city energy

Start your holiday in Rockhampton, where grand heritage streetscapes, riverside dining and a strong country identity meet some surprisingly wild landscapes.

Check into Empire Apartment Hotel overlooking the Fitzroy River and spend the afternoon getting acquainted with the city. Wander the Rockhampton Riverbank before heading towards Mount Archer National Park and the Nurim Circuit Elevated Boardwalk for expansive views over the city and surrounding landscape.

Rockhampton is worth more than a fuel stop on the way to the coast. Give it a little time and it becomes the first distinct chapter of the holiday.

If your arrival time allows, add a visit to Capricorn Caves, where ancient limestone formations and cave passages sit just north of the city and conveniently along the route towards Byfield.

Enjoy dinner in Rockhampton and settle in for the night. Because tomorrow, the city disappears.

Nights 2–3: Byfield — disappear into the green

Leave Rockhampton behind and head towards Byfield, where tall trees, tangled rainforest, freshwater creeks and quiet country roads create an immediate change of pace.

This is where the itinerary slows right down.

Byfield is often explored as a day trip, but staying a night or two gives you something very different: time to hear the forest wake up, take the longer way around and enjoy the rainforest without watching the clock.

Settle into one of the area’s character-filled stays such as Castle Rock Farm, and use Byfield as a base to properly explore.

Spend the day discovering Byfield State Forest, where walking tracks weave beneath palms, cycads and towering forest around Waterpark Creek.

Then make time for something made locally. Drop into Nob Creek Pottery and browse locally crafted ceramics — perhaps finding something that will eventually make its way from a rainforest studio to your kitchen table back home.

This is the point in the holiday where alarm clocks start becoming optional. And this is exactly why it’s worth staying a little longer.

Nights 4–5: Yeppoon — come back to the sea

After two days surrounded by green, follow the road back towards the blue.

Base yourself in Yeppoon for the next couple of nights and suddenly cafés, beaches, the foreshore and Keppel Bay are on the doorstep.

Choose a central coastal stay such as Oshen Apartments Yeppoon or Salt Yeppoon, giving you an easy base for exploring the foreshore, dining precinct and wider Capricorn Coast while still being close enough to leave the car behind and wander.

Swim at Yeppoon Lagoon, wander the foreshore, find somewhere for a long lunch and follow the coastline towards Rosslyn Bay as the afternoon softens.

The following day is a chance to explore further – and taste more of the region along the way.

Start with a visit to High Valley Dawn Permaculture Farm at Lammermoor, where veggie gardens, food forests, farm animals and sustainable living offer a very different experience just minutes from the beach. Explore the farm and discover how permaculture, food production and sustainable practices come together in this working Capricorn Coast property.

It’s a great reminder that a stay on the Capricorn Coast isn’t only about what happens beside the water.

Then follow the coast south towards Emu Park. Walk along the headland to the Singing Ship and ANZAC Memorial Walk, taking in views across the islands of Keppel Bay.

This is also a chance to taste some of the flavours being grown and made in the region. Seek out locally grown finger lime products from The Salty Lime Co or discover Capricorn Coast-inspired spirits from Reef Distillers — local producers helping tell a bigger story about what is grown, made and enjoyed here.

Don’t try to squeeze the whole coast into a few hurried hours.

Two nights gives you the luxury of a farm visit in the morning, an afternoon coastal drive or a swim that turns into several hours by the water.

Nights 6–7: Great Keppel Island — finish barefoot

For the final change of scenery, leave the mainland behind.

Make your way to Rosslyn Bay, where two local ferry operators connect the mainland with Great Keppel Island.

Freedom Fast Cats operates ferry transfers from Pier One at Rosslyn Bay Harbour, with regular services to Fisherman’s Beach on Great Keppel Island. The crossing takes approximately 30 minutes. Freedom Fast Cats also operates a range of Great Keppel Island and reef cruises, including glass-bottom boat experiences.

Keppel Konnections operates from the Red Jetty at Keppel Bay Marina, also within Rosslyn Bay Harbour, with multiple ferry services between the mainland and Great Keppel Island. The journey takes around 30–35 minutes.

Whichever service suits your itinerary, check current timetables and book ahead before travelling, particularly during busy holiday periods.

Then board the ferry and watch the mainland shrink behind you as Great Keppel Island comes into view.

Choose between a relaxed stay at Great Keppel Island Hideaway, including its newer Eco-Tents, or the easygoing island style of Great Keppel Island Holiday Village.

Then let the island decide the pace.

Pull on a mask and explore beneath the surface with Keppel Dive & Water Sports, head out with GKI Boat Hire, join a reef or sailing experience, follow one of the island’s walking tracks or simply find a quiet stretch of sand and stay there considerably longer than planned.

Travellers exploring the wider Keppel Bay area can also add experiences with operators such as Funtastic Cruises or Freedom Fast Cats to their coastal itinerary.

But don’t fill every hour. One of the real rewards of staying overnight on Great Keppel Island is getting to experience it after the day-trippers have left. The beach grows quieter. The pace slows again. Sunset isn’t the end of the excursion – it’s simply part of your evening.

One region. Four very different holidays.

Frequently asked questions

How many days do you need to explore Rockhampton and the Capricorn Coast?

A week gives you enough time to experience several very different parts of the region without rushing. This itinerary allows for one night in Rockhampton, two nights in Byfield, two nights in Yeppoon and two nights on Great Keppel Island.

Can you visit Rockhampton, Byfield, Yeppoon and Great Keppel Island in one holiday?

Yes. The four destinations can easily be combined into one road trip, with relatively short mainland driving distances followed by a passenger ferry from Rosslyn Bay to Great Keppel Island.

Is Byfield worth staying overnight?

Yes. While Byfield can be visited as a day trip from Yeppoon, staying overnight gives you more time to experience the rainforest, freshwater creeks, walking trails and local businesses at a slower pace.

What can you do around Yeppoon besides visit the beach?

Yeppoon is a good base for exploring much more than the coastline. Visitors can explore High Valley Dawn Permaculture Farm, drive south to Rosslyn Bay and Emu Park, discover local food and drink producers, walk the ANZAC Memorial Walk or spend time around Yeppoon’s foreshore and Lagoon.

How long should you stay on Great Keppel Island?

Two nights works particularly well as part of a longer Capricorn Coast itinerary. It gives you a full day on the island between arrival and departure, with time for beaches, snorkelling, walking and water-based experiences without trying to fit everything into a day trip.

Which ferries travel to Great Keppel Island?

Two passenger ferry operators connect Rosslyn Bay with Great Keppel Island: Freedom Fast Cats and Keppel Konnections. Both offer regular services between the mainland and the island, with the crossing taking around 30–35 minutes.

Do you need to book the Great Keppel Island ferry in advance?

Booking ahead is recommended, particularly during weekends, school holidays and other busy travel periods. Ferry times can change, so check the operator’s current timetable before travelling.

Do you need a car for this itinerary?

A car is the easiest way to complete the mainland portion of the itinerary, particularly for Byfield and exploring different parts of the Capricorn Coast. You can then leave the car on the mainland when travelling by passenger ferry to Great Keppel Island.

Where should you stay when visiting the Capricorn Coast?

Rather than choosing just one location, staying in several parts of the region lets you experience more. Rockhampton offers a city and heritage experience, Byfield provides rainforest and hinterland, Oshen Apartments and Salt Yeppoon provide central bases for the coastal leg, and Great Keppel Island adds a Southern Great Barrier Reef island stay.
